Namaste From CloudKid HQ

Earlier this year, we decided to start doing regular “skill shares” at CloudKid HQ. We think it’s important to learn about things outside of the realm of our usual day-to-day tasks. This helps us stay well-rounded as artists and helps break up our routines by learning something new. We started with some internal job-related shares: animator CloudKids taught others about animation basics; a graphic designer gave an intro to typography (and type crimes never to commit!); our Technical Producer showed us all how she creates wireframes for the experiences we make. These were just a few of our original skill shares, and they were a great way to kick off this exciting new tradition.

In addition to these interesting internal shares, we’ve also started to think outside the box a bit when it comes to what we’re sharing. More recently, the amazingly talented Larry Sampson did a guest skill share on production design. While he tends to work more on live action shoots, it was inspiring for all of us to hear about another artist’s process. We’ve also gone even further “outside of the box” with origami and yoga skill shares (as pictured above). These were really rad experiences that helped us refresh, recharge, and inspired us to consider potential new hobbies.

We strongly suggest taking some time every now and then to learn a new skill. We’d also love to hear any of your suggestions for future skill shares!

Student Visit

Last Friday, our welcoming committee (aka Mike and Sulley) greeted ten sophomores from Boston Preparatory Charter Public School on their visit to CloudKid HQ. The school has a focus on college and career readiness, and students take field trips to local businesses throughout the year. While many members of our staff have spoken at local universities and colleges, this was the first time we’ve hosted high school students in our offices.

After giving the students an intro to CloudKid and a tour of the office (which of course resulted in many a “This is where you work? There are so many toys!” reaction), we held a panel discussion with four of our employees. Students had the opportunity to ask questions and hear answers about everything from “what were you all like in high school” to “what advice do you have for us as we start to think about college and our careers?”. Our day was made when one student proclaimed “I didn’t think today was going to be that cool… but this is actually really cool!”.  We also loved getting to see the students interact with some of our games, including Negative Nimbus and Snacker Stacker, and we really enjoyed answering their questions about our work.

We hope we inspired some of the students to think more about potential career and college paths. Likewise, we hope any of you reading this may consider what you can do in your area to help local students. We promise, it will be well worth your time!

App Store Double Feature!

It’s a big day for us at CloudKid HQ: both Negative Nimbus and Hectic Harvest had app store releases. As of today, Negative Nimbus is now available on iPhone and iPod Touch (in addition to iPad). We’ve also released a new world with 8 additional levels, along with more hats, comics and achievements. We’re so excited to bring Nimbus and the Sunnyland crew to an even larger audience with this latest release, and we hope you all get a chance to play!

Today also marks the app store debut of Hectic Harvest, a Fizzy’s Lunch Lab game that we ported and optimized for iOS devices. We’re really excited to bring one of our favorite Lunch Lab games to this new platform, and really hope everyone enjoys playing as well. We can’t think of a better way to spend this rainy day than with two awesome new apps!

Fresh Pick: Coming Soon!

For the past nine months, we’ve been hard at work on Fresh Pick: The Search for the Next Lunch Labber. Like last year’s Escape from Greasy World, this new Fizzy’s project was funded by the Ready to Learn grant from the US Department of Education.

Fresh Pick will challenge kids to prove that they have what it takes to help Fizzy run the Lunch Lab. In a mock reality show format, kids will have to complete 8 different challenges that each put their math, reasoning and culinary know-how to the test. The games are self-leveling, and each comes with accompanying cinematics featuring different Lunch Lab characters (produced with our partners at Hero 4 Hire Creative). Of course, Freezer Burn also makes a music video appearance at the end of the experience.

We also partnered with PBS and UCLA CRESST to implement extensive analytics on the games, so that we can all learn a great deal about their use post-launch. Now that production has wrapped up, we’re so excited for Fresh Pick to roll out for computers and tablets in November. Stay tuned for more info on the launch!

Negative Nimbus Launches on iPad

It feels like just yesterday that we were dreaming up Negative Nimbus in our first company game jam. We’ve come a long way since that day last August, and we are so unbelievably proud to announce Nimbus’ app store debut. Nimbus and the rest of the Sunnyland gang launched on iPad today, and we will be releasing the game on iPhone and Android later this year. We’ve also released a new gameplay trailer that showcases the app in action.

This game has been a true labor of love for all of us at CloudKid HQ, and we are so excited to finally share it with all of you. Please check it out, and help spread the word to your own networks!

Meet Romo

Earlier this year, we excitedly partnered with Romotive, an innovative startup working on an amazing smartphone robot. As the Romotive team got their robots ready for launch, we worked on the design and animation of the “Romo” character, who will be the face of the experience.

The new Romotive website and Kickstarter just relaunched, and we’re super excited to see the new character designs and animations showcased. We’re currently working on even more cool features and new characters for Romotive, and we can’t wait to share those as well! Stay tuned for more information, but in the meantime, you can find out more about Romo here.

It’s That Time of Year Again…

To celebrate the wonder that is New England fall properly, last week we went on our 3rd Annual Apple Picking Palooza to Honeypot Hill. As in years past, we had a wonderful time picking apples, feeding goats, and breathing in the crisp fall air. Oh, and eating cinnamon sugar covered apple cider doughnuts from the farm store wasn’t too bad either!

We’re big believers in getting out of the office from time to time for a quick refresh, and this is definitely one of our favorite ways to do so. We’re already excited for next year’s outing, but in the meantime, check out the photos from this year’s trip!

Custom Weather Cards

Negative Nimbus has been submitted to the App Store and we’re so close to release! As we lead up to launch, we wanted a fun way to thank loyal Facebook and Twitter followers for helping spread the love. So, we’ve been whipping up our own versions of weather reports (see above), and sharing them with our fans. We like to think that these are a bit more fun than your average, run-of-the-mill weather forecasts!

If you haven’t already, please like/follow Nimbus and Bill, and you may find a custom weather card coming your way soon!

Negative Nimbus Wins First Award

As we mentioned last week, we spent Saturday at the Boston Festival of Indie Games, where Negative Nimbus picked up the “Awesome Aesthetics” award for best visuals and design in a game. We were humbled to be recognized among such talented and creative game studios from all over New England! It was also super exciting to see so many people playing (and enjoying!) the game. Aside from family and friends, this was our first time seeing Nimbus played by non-CloudKids, and the response was overwhelmingly positive.

The award we won was especially meaningful, as the winners were chosen by the festival attendees. Big thanks to everyone who stopped by to check out the game and to all those who voted to give Nimbus this award! Now, we are even more excited for Negative Nimbus to make his app store debut in the next few weeks!

Boston Festival of Indie Games

CloudKid HQ is abuzz with excitement over the Festival of Indie Games happening locally this weekend. We’ll be there exhibiting Negative Nimbus, and we are pumped to finally get the game into the hands of the masses!

If you’re going to be in the Boston area and are looking for a cool way to spend your Saturday, be sure to register for the free event. We’ll be giving away Nimbus and CloudKid branded swag, so stop by if you’re in the market for buttons and/or a cool t-shirt! Festival attendees will be amongst the first to play the app, so you’ll also gain some bragging rights. We look forward to hopefully seeing many of you there!

Be sure to check back here next week for photos from the event!
